Stir the mixture frequently so it doesn’t burn. You will probably need to add water to it as it cooks. I just keep a large measuring cup by the stove when I make this so I can add water as I am stirring it up. Once most of the liquid is soaked up and the pasta is tender its ready to eat. Now is the time to stir in any cheese or sour cream if you are using those. Serve with a salad and garlic bread and fruit for a complete meal.
When I was little girl my mother used to make this for dinner quite often. She got the recipe from my grandmother. It is a very humble, easy and delicious dish to make for dinner. It’s warm and so satisfying, especially on a cold winter night. You could easily vary this dish by adding chili, italian or taco seasoning, sour cream, cheese, vegetables, olives, onions or beans. I’ve made it with chicken too and it’s still so good! The possibilites are endless! I usually serve this with a salad and garlic bread and fruit.
To make this recipe you are going to brown one pound of hamburger in a skillet. Once it’s cooked drain off the fat. Put the hamburger back into the skillet and add 2 cups uncooked macaroni, 2 18 oz. cans crushed tomatoes, 1/4 cup of sugar, 1/2-1 tsp. salt. If you are adding anything else like seasoning, or beans or vegetables add that now as well. Stir everything together to combine and put a lid on it.
